Double page spread
- This double page spread is laid out in six columns. The first two columns is filled with a picture of a elderly male playing the piano. The male was also shown in a cover line in the contents page. The male is in a suit, looking at the music. The picture is edited in black and white, which in my opinion, sets the atmosphere. There are additional images used in the fifth column. There is a pull quote in the third column.
- The text again is written in a formal text which could appeal for their target audience. Also the double page spread is not crowded, and is very simple, there is not much colour used. This could also appeal to their target audience.
Contents Page.
- There are two sections to this contents page. The top half is filled with three images and the bottom half names 'contents'. There are three columns of the contents. The third column is a advertisement of the article '50 greatest records of all time' This is directly in the middle which we could assume that it is important. The colours used for this is gold, white, red, black, which are normally seen as quite royal colours.
- I think that the target audience for this would be around 47-65. I think this because the article '50 greatest records of all time looks quite vintage, which could suggest that the magazine was made for the older generation, and there is a article on opera which is typically aimed at older people. Also the language used in the contents page is quite formal, which again could suggest that it was targeting the older generation. I think that the gender that was aimed for was both female and male. i think this because he colours used are quite neutral.
- The language used in the contents page, such as 'A month in music' 'on your Christmas CD' etc. This could suggest that the magazine was made near Christmas. which could explain why they have used the 'traditional' colour red.
Semiotic analysis
- The main sign on the front cover is of an image of a man. This male has been photogrpahed. He is sat on a bench, against a brick background. The man is sat crossed leg , with one hand on the arm of the bench and his other on his lap. He is photographed straight but his head is turned to the left
- The sign could connote him looking relaxed, happy, taking in the moment.
- The anchorage of this sign is 'Pierre-Laurent Aimard. French revolution at aldeburgh' This anchorage is showing us that the man in the picture is famous. By the looks of the photo, he could be listening to classical music, he is smirking which could suggest that he is happy and proud of the music.
- At the top of the magazine is the masthead, with the 'Classical' being in a italic font and bigger than the word 'music'. With the classical being in a bigger font could suggest that they want the audience to recognise its a classical magazine.
- Towards the left of the image are cover lines, With the main heading being in a sky blue colour and the information underneath coloured in white. There are also cover lines towards the bottom left hand side.
- At the right hand bottom side of the magazine is the bar code and the price tag. The price is in a small text which could suggest that it is quite expensive, therefore they wouldn't want it to be the first thing the buyers see.
Double page spread
- The top half of this double page spread is an image of a choir, in a church. The image is taken side on. The masthead is on the right hand side of the two pages reading 'last choirs standing', this is in a serif font. The bottom half of the two pages is text about the article. These are laid out in 6 columns, with a image taking up one of the columns. In the centre of the fifth column is a brown box with a pull quote from the article.
Contents page of a classical music magazine
- The top half of the page is filled with images of articles that are going to be included within the magazine. The images contain famous people within the classical music industry. People who are into classical music and enjoy listening to famous and popular artists, seeing this will make them want to read on. Towards the right hand side of the page is a grean circle which contains an advert about what you can recieve free inside the magazine. because this is a different colour, it draws your attention to it.
- The middle of the page, says what month it is, which is common for a magazine. below this is this is the contents which will be included in the magazine. There are page references, the number coloured in a bright orange colour and the writing in coloured in black.
Semiotic analysis
- There are many signs on the front cover of this magazine, one of these signs is the image of the female. This sign denotes a semi-close up of a female, it has probably been photographed in a studio, against a white background. Her hair is a light brown and is down, with some strands just coming across her face. She has little make-up on and has a natural smile. she looks like she is standing side on with her head turned to look directly at the camera.
- This sign connotes many things (it is polysemic) it could connote 'happiness', 'natural' 'beauty' .. etc
- The anchorage of this image is 'My Musical Mission!'. This anchorage uses alliteration which draws your attention to it and makes the phrase more catchy.
- At the top of the magazine is the masthead reading 'Classic fm' this is the name of the magazine. The text is large with a serif font. Some of the letters are coloured in white and some are coloured in black, The 'F' is in italic font. I think this has been done so the name of the magazine is more recognisable, and you be able to remember it.
- At the top left hand side of the magazine is a red box (on white back ground) with the words 'FREE CD!' printed inside with white text. When reading a magazine, you usually start at the top left hand corner and work your way down to the right bottom hand corner. Therefore this immediately catches your eye. As this is one of the first things you see, this could convince people to buy it as your getting a magazine and a CD for the same price.
Representation of social groups
- I think the magazine is aimed at and represents early 40's and late 50's. I think it is for people who are very interested in the classical music industry and enjoy relaxing to classical, and listening to it in their free time. I think people who buy this magazine would play a musical instrument as a hobby.
Institution
Genre convention
- The classical music magazine genre is usually aimed at older audiences (their 40's, and upwards). The classical music magazine is generally more formal because of its target audience .
Audience
- I think that the target audience for this Classical music magazine would be female gender, because of the female (looking natural) on the front cover and the colour red being a main part of the magazine, I think the age will be ranging from the age of 41-55. I think the phychographic audience would be carers and succeeder's, and on the jicnar scale they would be B. I think the people who read this classical magazine would enjoy listening to classical in their free time, would play an instrument, and maybe be a teacher who teaches music. I also think with the target audience being 'succeeder's' that females who buy this magazine are married and eat out allot.
Construction Schedule
First I will take my photograph of the female. I will take my photograph with the woods behind the female. the female will be quite a distance away from the trees, as this will give the background a blurry effect. I will take a range of photos so I have a couple to choose from.
I will then upload these photo's onto the computer and choose which one, i think, will be best for my magazine.
Once I have decided what image is best, I will then choose what text I want on my magazine cover. I have designed a rough example of what I want my magazine cover to look like.
Looking at my plan, I will decide where I want to position my text that will also complement the image.
Then looking at the theme of my magazine cover I will decide what colour I will want my text, again complementing the image and the theme.
